A precise electrical takeoff is the foundation of every accurate estimate. The takeoff determines your material quantities, which directly affect your bid price. Here are proven best practices used by professional estimators.
Use Digital Takeoff Software
Modern estimators use digital takeoff tools like Bluebeam Revu, Planswift, or On-Screen Takeoff to measure quantities directly from PDF drawings. These tools are faster and more accurate than manual scaling. They also create a permanent record of your measurements.
Follow a Systematic Approach
Don't randomly jump around the drawings. Follow a systematic approach:
- Start with power distribution — switchgear, panels, feeders
- Move to branch circuits — conduit runs, wire pulls, devices
- Count lighting fixtures and controls
- Measure fire alarm and low voltage systems
- Add site and exterior electrical
Account for Waste and Accessories
Always add waste factors to wire (typically 10%) and conduit (5%). Don't forget accessories like fittings, connectors, supports, hangers, boxes, and covers — these small items add up to significant cost.
